How to Plan a Scouting Trip to Cambutal

A week on the ground will tell you more than a year of browsing listings.

Most people who end up living here started with one trip. If you’re seriously considering a move, plan a trip with a purpose: see the place, see the land, and see what everyday life is really like.

When to come

Come in both seasons if you can. The dry season (roughly December–April) is beautiful and shows you what a "high season" looks like here. It will also give you an idea of what everything looks like when it has not rained in months. The rainy season shows you the infinite shade of green at their fullest, but also how high the rivers get and the condition of the dirt roads. If you can only come once, that’s fine. Just ask about the season you’re missing.

How long to stay

At least a week. It takes a bit to get here and the first few days you’re on vacation. After that, you start to see daily life: the supply runs, the power outages, the neighbors.

Where to stay

Stay in a hotel or a rental in town rather than a resort bubble. If you’re weighing more than one town, split your stay so you sleep in both.

What to do while you’re here

  • Walk the land. Visit properties in Cambutal, Guánico and Búcaro, ideally with someone who knows them.

  • Drive the roads. Try the drive to Tonosí and to Las Tablas or Chitré. That’s your future supply run.

  • Shop for groceries. See what’s on the shelves and what isn’t.

  • Talk to people. Fellow transplants and locals will both tell you things no listing will.

  • Work for a day. If you’ll work remotely, test the internet on a real workday.

Questions to answer before you leave

  • Which town fits your daily rhythm?

  • Can you picture the rainy season here?

  • What’s your realistic budget for land and building?

  • Do you understand the difference between titled land and Rights of Possession? (Our Buyer’s Guide covers it.)

Let’s plan it together

Tell me your dates and what you’re looking for, and I’ll line up property visits so you make the most of your time on the ground.
